WHAT IS ANEMIA?

Anemia is a decrease in the amount of red blood cells or RBCs.

SYMPTOMS OF ANEMIA
  • Weakness
  • Feeling tired
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Pale skin
  • Low body temperature
  • Numbness and coldness in hands/feet
ANEMIA CAN AFFECT YOUR HEART
  • Dyspnea (Shortness of Breath)
  • Chest Pain
  • Arrythmia
People with anemia have a decrease of oxygen in their blood. The heart works harder to pump enough oxygen to other organs in the body. Inappropriate iron levels in blood causes people to eat: clay, dirt, ice, or starch. This behavior is called PICA.

EFFECTS: Without treatment, a severe case of anemia could permanently affect brain development.

CAUSES OF ANEMIA: A diet low in iron, folate, or vitamin B12.

OTHER CAUSES OF ANEMIA: Pregnant female, teenage female, heavy menses, improper diet, growth spurts in infants and teens. Pediatricians check complete blood count or CBC @ 6 months and 1 year of age.

HOW TO TREAT: Iron from plants and supplements is NOT absorbed as well as the iron in red meats. Check with your physician to see if you will need iron injections, oral supplements or increase dietary intake of red meats.

FOODS TO AVOID: Avoid dairy, foods rich in calcium, caffeine, and calcium based antacids.
