Benefits of Ginger, Honey, and Lemon


It's that time of year. We need to get our bodies ready for the winter. One way of doing that is supplying our bodies with antioxidants like ginger, honey, lemon.

Ginger has at least twelve types of antioxidants, making it useful for treatment of a wide range of disorders. The health benefits of lemon are due to its many nourishing elements. Vitamin C helps repairs cells.

Honey  can be a powerful immune system booster. Its antioxidant and anti-bacterial properties can help improve overall immune function, keep you healthy, and fight disease. Get this! Honey can help combat sore throats with its antimicrobial properties. Honey can kill certain bacteria that causes throat infections.

So, grab your favorite mug, fill it with hot water and make some ginger, honey, lemon tea.

HEAT STROKE SYMPTOMS

  • Body temperature of 104°F or higher obtained using a rectal 
    thermometer
  • Altered mental state such as confusion, agitation, irritability, disorientation, delirium
  • Altered behavior such as slurred speech, staggering

  • Alteration in sweat leading to dry skin

    PREVENTION
    • Limit time in sun remember it is hottest from 1000 until 1400 (2 pm)
    • Limit exposure to sun use wide brimmed hats, sunglasses, use cooling agents Frogg Toggs Hi-Vis Chilly Pads
    • Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate water is best, alternate with Gatorade especially if sweating profusely
    • Avoid sugar laden caffeinated drinks
    • Avoid drinks with alcohol

CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE

Overview

Heart failure, sometimes known as congestive heart failure, occurs when your heart muscle doesn't pump blood as well as it should. Certain conditions, such as narrowed arteries in your heart (coronary artery disease) or high blood pressure, gradually leave your heart too weak or stiff to fill and pump efficiently.
Not all conditions that lead to heart failure can be reversed, but treatments can improve the signs and symptoms of heart failure and help you live longer. Lifestyle changes — such as exercising, reducing sodium in your diet, managing stress and losing weight — can improve your quality of life.
One way to prevent heart failure is to prevent and control conditions that cause heart failure, such as coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, diabetes or obesity.

Symptoms

Heart failure can be ongoing (chronic), or your condition may start suddenly (acute).
Heart failure signs and symptoms may include:
  • Shortness of breath (dyspnea) when you exert yourself or when you lie down
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Swelling (edema) in your legs, ankles and feet
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat
  • Reduced ability to exercise
  • Persistent cough or wheezing with white or pink blood-tinged phlegm
  • Increased need to urinate at night
  • Swelling of your abdomen (ascites)
  • Very rapid weight gain from fluid retention
  • Lack of appetite and nausea
  • Difficulty concentrating or decreased alertness
  • Sudden, severe shortness of breath and coughing up pink, foamy mucus
  • Chest pain if your heart failure is caused by a heart attack

When to see a doctor

See your doctor if you think you might be experiencing signs or symptoms of heart failure. Seek emergency treatment if you experience any of the following:
  • Chest pain
  • Fainting or severe weakness
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat associated with shortness of breath, chest pain or fainting
  • Sudden, severe shortness of breath and coughing up pink, foamy mucus
Although these signs and symptoms may be due to heart failure, there are many other possible causes, including other life-threatening heart and lung conditions. Don't try to diagnose yourself. Call 911 or your local emergency number for immediate help. Emergency room doctors will try to stabilize your condition and determine if your symptoms are due to heart failure or something else.
If you have a diagnosis of heart failure and if any of the symptoms suddenly become worse or you develop a new sign or symptom, it may mean that existing heart failure is getting worse or not responding to treatment. This may be also the case if you gain 5 pounds (2.3 kg) or more within a few days. Contact your doctor promptly.

6 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE YOUR MEDICAL DOCTOR'S APPOINTMENT

1.  Some doctors offices do not have registered or licensed nurses on staff. They have untrained, uneducated,  and unprepared people who they refer to as nurses. Ask your provider is his assistant an RN or LPN. You might be surprised and disappointed in the answer.  If they are not licensed nurses, you are being deceived. It is actually against the law to practice nursing without a license and it puts you as a patient at great risk.

2. You should take your medications including the over-the-counter non prescription medications in the original bottles to every doctor's visit and ER visit. There is information on the label that is important to the medical staff. List are not effective. For refrigerated medicines, just bring the box.

3. Your medical record is a legal document. When you willingly mislead  your medical team, you are only harming yourself.

4. You should arrive early for your doctor's appointment to complete paperwork. Completing paperwork can put you 30 to 45 minutes behind which in turn puts the doctor behind.

5. When you see a specialist, make sure all records pertaining to your illness/condition arrive before your appointment time. For instance if you are seeing a cardiologist, she will need EKG, H&P (history and physical), recent  labs, any testing e.g. ECHO, peripheral testing/scans, heart cath, CT scans.  Sending your health care records helps your doctor treat you more effectively and efficiently. It will save you time and money by not repeating test.

6. If a doctor is going to perform any testing or treatments, it is his/her legal responsibility to inform you before you sign anything. Ask questions about the testing or treatments. Make sure you fully comprehend before you sign the consent.

5 Things That Could Be Causing Your Leg Cramps



Leg cramps are both annoying and painful. When the pain hits frequently you may be wondering what caused the cramp in the first place.

Some of the causes of leg cramps include:
Lack of Exercise

Regular exercise is important to overall muscle health. If you participate in strenuous exercise it's important to remember to stretch both before and after the exercise. In fact, stretching itself can be a great exercise. The popularity of yoga is a testament to this. Stretch your calves by keeping your feet flat on the floor and leaning forward with your hands on a wall in front of you.

Stretch your hamstrings by standing straight and touching your toes. Stretch your quads by standing on one leg and holding your ankle behind your leg in one hand.
Dehydration
Your muscles are 70 percent water. This is important to remember when looking at the different causes of your leg cramps. Experts agree that you should be drinking eight glasses of water per day, or about 64 ounces, which is two quarts per day. This will ensure proper muscle hydration and fluidity.
High Rate of Sweat
If you sweat a lot then this can be another factor to take into consideration. If you exercise a lot in cooler temperatures and then try to exercise at the same pace in a warmer climate you can experience severe leg cramps. It also can lead to dehydration which exacerbates the cramping.
Drinking Too Much Water
While dehydration is by far the main cause of leg cramps, it is important to realize that there is a danger on the other end of the spectrum as well. Drinking too much water, which is defined as more than a gallon a day, can cause the body to flush too many on its electrolytes through its system, thereby leading to cramping.
Lack of Electrolytes
Another common cause of leg cramps is a lack of electrolytes. The most important electrolytes that your body needs are sodium, magnesium, potassium, and calcium. Sodium is simply salt and can be found in a variety of foods that are widely available. If you have deficiencies of magnesium, almonds are a great natural source. And bananas are a great source of potassium. Finally, calcium is found in abundance in dairy products like cheese and yogurt.

If you keep your diet high in electrolytes, drink enough water, and do proper stretching before exercise you should minimize leg cramping as much as possible in the future.

Tick Borne Illnesses

Symptoms of Tick Borne Illness

Many tick borne diseases can have similar signs and symptoms. If you have been bitten by a tick and develop the symptoms below within a few weeks, a health care provider should evaluate the following before deciding on a course of treatment:
  • Your symptoms
  • The geographic region in which you were bitten
  • Diagnostic tests, if indicated by the symptoms and the region where you were bitten
The most common symptoms of tick-related illnesses are:
  • Fever/chills: With all tick borne diseases, patients can experience fever at varying degrees and time of onset.
  • Aches and pains: Tick borne disease symptoms include headache, fatigue, and muscle aches. With Lyme disease you may also experience joint pain. The severity and time of onset of these symptoms can depend on the disease and the patient's personal tolerance level.
  • Rash: 
    • In Lyme disease, the rash may appear within 3-30 days, typically before the onset of fever. The Lyme disease rash is the first sign of infection and is usually a circular rash. This rash occurs in approximately 70-80% of infected persons and begins at the site of a tick bite. It may be warm, but is not usually painful. Some patients develop additional EM lesions in other areas of the body several days later.
    • The rash of (STARI) is nearly identical to that of Lyme disease, with a red, expanding "bulls eye" lesion that develops around the site of a lone star tick bite. Unlike Lyme disease, STARI has not been linked to any arthritic or neurological symptoms.
    • The rash seen with Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) varies greatly from person to person in appearance, location, and time of onset. About 10% of people with RMSF never develop a rash. Most often, the rash begins 2-5 days after the onset of fever as small, flat, pink, non-itchy spots (macules) on the wrists, forearms, and ankles and spreads to the trunk. It sometimes involves the palms and soles. The red to purple, spotted (petechial) rash of RMSF is usually not seen until the sixth day or later after onset of symptoms and occurs in 35-60% of patients with the infection.
    • In the most common form of tularemia, a skin ulcer appears at the site where the organism entered the body. The ulcer is accompanied by swelling of regional lymph glands, usually in the armpit or groin.
    • In about 30% of patients (and up to 60% of children), ehrlichiosis can cause a rash. The appearance of the rash ranges from macular to maculopapular to petechial, and may appear after the onset of fever.
Tick borne diseases can result in mild symptoms treatable at home to severe infections requiring hospitalization. Although easily treated with antibiotics, these diseases can be difficult for physicians to diagnose. However, early recognition and treatment of the infection decreases the risk of serious complications. So see your doctor immediately if you have been bitten by a tick and experience any of the symptoms described here.

The symptoms include acute, ascending, flaccid paralysis that is often confused with other neurological disorders or diseases (e.g., Guillain-Barré syndrome or botulism). Within 24 hours of removing the tick, the paralysis typically subsides.

Hiccups

 

What are hiccups?

Hiccups are strange gulping sounds caused by spasms of the diaphragm. The diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscle between the chest and the abdomen.

What causes hiccups?

Hiccups may be caused by an over-full stomach from eating too much. The stomach presses against the diaphragm. A child may have hiccups after drinking too much soda.
Sometimes babies get hiccups while feeding. If this happens, try changing the baby's position. Also try to burp the baby. If the hiccups don't go away, give the baby a little water. Wait until the hiccups are gone before you try feeding again.

When should I call my child's healthcare provider?

Call IMMEDIATELY if:
The hiccups last more than 3 hours (the usual time needed to empty the stomach) and your child is uncomfortable.

What is Radiation Sickness?

Radiation sickness



The treatment goals for radiation sickness are to prevent further radioactive contamination; treat life-threatening injuries, such as from burns and trauma; reduce symptoms; and manage pain.

Decontamination

Decontamination is the removal of as much external radioactive particles as possible. Removing clothing and shoes eliminates about 90 percent of external contamination. Gently washing with water and soap removes additional radiation particles from the skin.
Decontamination prevents further distribution of radioactive materials and lowers the risk of internal contamination from inhalation, ingestion or open wounds.

Treatment for damaged bone marrow

A protein called granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, which promotes the growth of white blood cells, may counter the effect of radiation sickness on bone marrow. Treatment with this protein-based medication, which includes filgrastim (Neupogen), sargramostim (Leukine) and pegfilgrastim (Neulasta), may increase white blood cell production and help prevent subsequent infections.
If you have severe damage to bone marrow, you may also receive transfusions of red blood cells or blood platelets.

Treatment for internal contamination

Some treatments may reduce damage to internal organs caused by radioactive particles. Medical personnel would use these treatments only if you've been exposed to a specific type of radiation. These treatments include the following:
  • Potassium iodide (Thyroshield, Iosat). This is a nonradioactive form of iodine.
    Because iodine is essential for proper thyroid function, the thyroid becomes a "destination" for iodine in the body. If you have internal contamination with radioactive iodine (radioiodine), your thyroid will absorb radioiodine just as it would other forms of iodine. Treatment with potassium iodide may fill "vacancies" in the thyroid and prevent absorption of radioiodine. The radioiodine is eventually cleared from the body in urine.
    Potassium iodide isn't a cure-all and is most effective if taken within a day of exposure.
  • Prussian blue (Radiogardase). This type of dye binds to particles of radioactive elements known as cesium and thallium. The radioactive particles are then excreted in feces. This treatment speeds up the elimination of the radioactive particles and reduces the amount of radiation cells may absorb.
  • Diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA). This substance binds to metals. DTPA binds to particles of the radioactive elements plutonium, americium and curium. The radioactive particles pass out of the body in urine, thereby reducing the amount of radiation absorbed.

Supportive treatment

If you have radiation sickness, you may receive additional medications or interventions to treat:
  • Bacterial infections
  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Dehydration
  • Burns

End-of-life care

A person who has absorbed large doses of radiation (10 Gy or greater) has little chance of recovery. Depending on the severity of illness, death can occur within two days or two weeks. People with a lethal radiation dose will receive medications to control pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. They may also benefit from psychological or pastoral care

What is influenza?

Influenza (flu) is a highly contagious viral infection that infects the nose, throat, and lungs. The flu virus is spread easily from one person to another through droplets made when people with flu, cough, talk or sneeze. On rare occasions, a person might also get flu by touching surfaces (doorknobs, handles, and telephones) that have droplets of the flu virus on them.
There are three types of flu: A, B, and C. Types A and B are responsible for outbreaks of respiratory infection that occur during the winter months and are often linked to increased rates of hospital stays. Statistics show that more than 200,000 people in the United States are hospitalized every year because of the complications of the flu.
Influenza type C does not cause outbreaks and does not have the severe public health impact of the other two types of influenza viruses.

SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER

Seasonal affective disorder affects millions of people, It impacts those who already suffer from chronic depression or other mental illnesses or disorders. HAND, FOOT, MOUTH DISEASE

 

What is hand, foot and mouth disease?

Hand, foot, and mouth disease is a disease caused by a virus. Children 6 months to 4 years old are most at risk. The disease happens most often in the summer or fall.
Your child may have hand, foot, and mouth disease, if your child has:
  • Small, painful sores in his mouth.
  • Small water blisters or red spots on the palms of his hands and soles of the feet. You may also see these on the webs between the fingers and toes.
  • Five or fewer blisters on each hand or foot
  • Fever between 100°F and 102°F
The fever goes away by the 3rd or 4th day. The mouth sores go away in 7 days. The rash on the hands and feet can last 10 days.

How can I take care of my child?

Helping the pain.
  • If your child is very young, put 1/2 teaspoon antacid solution in the front of the mouth 4 times a day after meals.
  • Children over age 4 can use 1 teaspoon of an antacid solution as a mouthwash after meals.
  • Give acetaminophen or ibuprofen if your child's mouth really hurts, or for fever over 102° F. No aspirin.
Feeding your child.
  • Give soft foods, like yogurt, cottage cheese, and Jell-O.
  • Use a cup instead of a bottle.
  • Cold drinks, milkshakes, Popsicles, and sherbet can feel good.
  • Stay away from citrus, salty, or spicy foods.
Spreading hand, foot, and mouth disease.
  • Your child's playmates may get the disease in 3 to 6 days.
  • Your child may go back to school when the fever goes away.

Call your child's doctor right away if:

  • Your child has not urinated for more than 8 hours.
  • Your child gets a stiff neck.
  • Your child acts very sick.

Call your child's doctor during office hours if:

  • The fever lasts more than 3 days.
  • You have other concerns or questions.

TRIGLYCERIDES:WHAT ARE THEY? WHAT CAN YOU DO TO LOWER TRIGLYCERIDES?

What are triglycerides?

Triglycerides are a type of fat found in your blood. Your body uses them for energy.
You need some triglycerides for good health. But high triglycerides might raise your risk of  heart disease and may be a sign of metabolic syndrome which
is the combination of high blood pressure, high blood sugar, too much fat around the waist, low HDL ("good") cholesterol, and high triglycerides. Metabolic syndrome increases your risk for heart disease, diabetes and stroke.
A lab test that measures your cholesterol also measures your triglycerides. Triglycerides  levels are listed below:

  • Normal is < 150
  • Borderline-high is 150 to 199.
  • High is 200 to 499.
  • Very high is 500 or higher.

What causes high triglycerides?

High triglycerides are usually caused by other conditions, such as:
  • Obesity
  • Poorly controlled diabetes.
  • An under active thyroid (hypothyroidism).
  • Kidney disease.
  • Regularly eating more calories than you burn.
  • Drinking a lot of alcohol.
Medicines may also raise triglycerides. These medicines include:

  • Steroids
  • Beta blockers
  • Diuretics
  • Estrogen
  • Birth control pills 
  • Tamoxifen

What are the symptoms?

High triglycerides usually don't cause symptoms.
But if your high triglycerides are caused by a genetic condition, you may see fatty deposits under your skin called xanthomas (pronounced zan-THOH-muhs).

How can you lower your high triglycerides?

Talk to your doctor about diet and lifestyle changes to help reduce high levels of triglycerides.
  • Lose weight and stay at a healthy weight.
  • Limit fats and sugars in your diet.
  • Be more active.
  • Stop smoking
  • Limit alcohol.
Speak with your healthcare provider concerning medications to help lower your triglycerides.

ADULT ONSET HYDROCEPHALUS

 

 

Hydrocephalus

Hydrocephalus comes from the Greek words hydro meaning water and cephalus meaning head.

Hydrocephalus is an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)  in the ventricles of the brain.  Cerebrospinal fluid is produced in the ventricles and in the choroid plexus. It circulates through the ventricular system in the brain and is absorbed into the bloodstream. This fluid is in constant circulation and has many functions, including  surround the brain and spinal cord to act as a protective cushion against injury. It contains nutrients and proteins necessary for the nourishment and normal function of the brain. It aslo carries waste products away from surrounding tissues.

Hydrocephalus occurs when there is an imbalance between the amount of CSF that is produced and the rate at which it is absorbed. As the CSF builds up, it causes the ventricles to enlarge and the pressure inside the head to increase resulting in headaches in adult onset.

What  demographic develops hydrocephalus?

WHAT IS ALKALINE PHOSPHATASE

Alkaline Phosphatase




An alkaline phosphatase (ALP) test measures the amount of the enzyme ALP in the blood. ALP is made mostly in the liver  and in bone with some made in the intestines and kidneys. It also is made by the placenta of a pregnant woman.


The liver makes more ALP than the other organs or the bones. Some conditions cause large amounts of ALP in the blood. These conditions include rapid bone growth (during puberty), bone disease (such as Paget's disease or cancer that has spread to the bones), a disease that affects how much calcium is in the blood (hyperparathyroidism), vitamin D deficiency, or damaged liver cells.


If the ALP level is high, more tests may be done to find the cause. The amounts of different types of ALP in the blood may be measured and used to determine whether a high level is from the liver or bones. This is called an alkaline phosphatase isoenzymes test.

Why It Is Done


A test for alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is done to:

  • Check for liver disease or damage to the liver. Symptoms of liver disease can include jaundice, belly pain, nausea, and vomiting. An ALP test may also be used to check the liver when medicines that can damage the liver are taken.
  • Check bone problems (sometimes found on X-rays), such as rickets, bone tumors, Paget's disease, or too much of the hormone that controls bone growth (parathyroid hormone). The ALP level can be used to check how well treatment for Paget's disease or a vitamin D deficiency is working.

How To Prepare


An alkaline phosphatase test is often done at the same time as a routine blood test. You do not need to do anything before having a routine blood test.

If you are having a follow-up ALP test, you may be asked to not eat or drink for 10 hours before the test. The ALP level generally goes up after eating, especially after eating fatty foods.

Many medicines may change the results of this test. Be sure to tell your doctor about all the nonprescription and prescription medicines you take.
